FTTSA launches partnership with World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Tourism for Tomorrow Awards 2013

The definition of success in business globally is changing to integrate sustainable practices into the business model. The WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow Awards recognise and reward companies who are ahead of the game in sustainable practices.

Each year the Awards distinguish global leaders in sustainable tourism. Its rigorous three-step judging process involving up to 22 independent expert judges from all around the world, with on-site evaluations of all award finalists, set them apart from similar schemes and have made the Awards one of the highest accolades in the global Travel & Tourism industry.

FTTSA is a non-profit organisation that promotes sustainable tourism development. We do this through awareness raising, research and advocacy, capacity building and by facilitating the world’s first tourism Fair Trade certification programme. FTTSA is a non-profit, responsible tourism certification scheme that has been operating in South Africa since 2003, which assesses performance against global and international standards
across the triple bottom line – environmental, economic and social responsibility.

FTTSA awards the use of special label to qualifying businesses as a way of signifying their commitment to Fair Trade criteria including fair wages and working conditions, fair purchasing, fair operations, equitable distribution of benefits and respect for human rights, culture and environment.

By electing to stay at or use the services of an FTTSA-certified establishment, tourists are assured that their travel benefits local communities and economies, and that the business is operated ethically and in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. To see currently certified businesses please visit the FTTSA website.

By partnering with WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow, FTTSA is adding another layer of awareness raising to its programme. WTTC forms partnerships with the world’s most respected organisations and companies known for their commitment to responsible leadership, working to pursue the same goal.

Katarina Mancama, FTTSA Marketing Manager commented “it makes perfect sense for FTTSA and WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow Awards to become partners; we work towards the same goals, and if we can enhance each other’s efforts these goals may just be a little closer.”

David Scowsill, President & CEO, WTTC said: “The Tourism for Tomorrow Awards recognise the very best in sustainable tourism practices worldwide. But WTTC cannot do this on its own; we need to work with partners that share our ambitions, recognise local excellence and can help us to spread the word about the Awards all over the planet. The FTTSA is a well-established certification scheme which has been operating in South Africa for almost ten years; it is through the work of organisations such as the FTTSA that sustainable tourism will become ever more mainstream.”
